The Law Society of Hong Kong places great importance on cooperation and exchanges with Mainland law schools, particularly on nurturing legal talent with international perspectives.
On 4 July, President Mr Roden Tong, Chairlady of Greater China Young Solicitors Sub-Committee Ms Sharon Tam, and Member of Greater China Legal Affairs Committee Ms Celeste Lo warmly welcomed a delegation from Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s KoGuan School of Law (“Law School”). Primarily composed of law students, the delegation was led by the Law School’s Deputy Director of International Office Ms Yin Lan. The event was also joined by Vice-Chairman of the Hong Kong Legal Exchange Foundation Mr Barry Chin.
During the meeting, President Tong extended a warm welcome to the students and took the opportunity to explain the distinctions between solicitors and barristers as the two separate branches of the legal profession. Afterwards, representatives from the Law Society provided comprehensive insights into the unique features of Hong Kong’s common law system, the professional legal practice, and the core functions and recent initiatives of the Law Society. Through clear explanations in simple language, students gained a deeper appreciation of the latest development and international advantages of Hong Kong’s legal profession.
The Law Society of Hong Kong has long been committed to nurturing legal talents from the Mainland and abroad. This commitment is vividly embodied in the establishment of the Common Law Centre, which aims to more effectively and systematically promote the implementation of common law training courses, and to provide universities and legal practitioners in non-common law jurisdictions including the Mainland with courses for their greater understanding on the common law system.
The Law Society will continue to maintain friendly relations with Mainland law schools in fostering the development of legal professionals with a global perspective and contributing to the advancement of national legal frameworks and international legal services.
