The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (“GBA”) includes nine cities in Mainland China, as well as the Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions. In 2018, a joint meeting system was established by the respective lawyer’s associations in GBA to foster communication, collaboration and shared development of the legal profession in the region. The 15th Joint Meeting for Lawyers' Associations in the GBA was hosted by Macau Lawyers Association was successfully held on 17 May 2025 (Saturday) in Macau.

Led by President Mr Roden Tong, the delegation from the Law Society included Council Member and Vice-Chairman of the Greater China Legal Affairs Committee (“GCLAC”) Mr Neville Cheng, Council Member and GCLAC Vice-Chairlady Ms Heidi Chui, Council Member and Chairperson of the Working Party for Beijing Council Visit Ms Chris Zhao, Council Member and Chairlady of Community Relations Committee Ms Joyce Cheng, as well as GCLAC Vice-Chairman Dr James Wong.

Advancing Legal Professional Collaboration Across the Three Regions

During the meeting, the lawyers' associations from the three regions exchanged views on various regional legal issues and shared practical experiences. The Law Society put forward several proposals, including establishing a handling mechanism for cross-border conflict of interest; promoting professional training courses, and encouraging Mainland enterprises to employ Hong Kong solicitors to strengthen their capabilities on handling risk management related to international matters. The Law Society also highlighted relevant courses from its Common Law Centre to deepen the understanding of common law systems and practices among lawyers within the region, so as to enhance professional standards and capabilities on cross-jurisdictional collaborations.

Strengthening Regional Legal Services for Mutual Development

The Law Society is committed to collaborating with legal professionals from the nine cities in the GBA to elevate the standards of the legal profession and contribute to regional economic development and the construction of rule of law. Going forward, the Law Society will continue to share the latest developments in the GBA’s with its members and assist them in seizing opportunities and broadening their professional horizons.

This joint meeting not only further strengthened the close ties among lawyers’ associations within the three regions but also laid a solid foundation for building a more comprehensive regional legal service framework.
