On 18 December 2024, the 14th Joint Meeting (“Joint Meeting”) for Lawyers’ Associations in the Greater Bay Area (“GBA”) hosted by The Law Society was held at the Hong Kong Cricket Club (“Club”).
Representatives from The Law Society included President Roden Tong, Vice-President Careen Wong, Council member and Vice-Chairman of the Greater China Legal Affairs Committee (“GCLAC”) Neville Cheng, Council member and Vice-Chairlady of the GCLAC Heidi Chui, Convenor of the “Working Group of the Opening Ceremony for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Lawyers Sports Meet” Fred Kan, as well as Vice Chairman of the GCLAC Dr James Wong.
Representatives of the lawyers’ associations of nine Mainland cities of the GBA and the Macao Lawyers Association participated at the meeting.
During the Meeting, the representatives discussed various topics, including strengthening efforts related to the construction of rule of law and nurturing legal talent in the GBA; training and assessment arrangements for lawyers in the region; professional development for foreign-related lawyers; the establishment of a focus group to study the issues in relation to conflict of interests and the interfaces of mechanisms in the GBA; as well as matters related to professional indemnity and practice insurance.
After the meeting, the representatives toured Hong Kong's first private club and appreciated some valuable historical photographs of Hong Kong displayed in the Club. The Law Society also hosted a dinner, where members of the Council, the GCLAC and its Sub-Committees joined to connect with our guests from other GBA cities and Hong Kong lawyers in a relaxed atmosphere.
At the meeting, The Law Society provided updates on the Sports Law Mega Event scheduled for February 2025.
