Vice-President and Chairman of International Legal Affairs Committee (“ILAC”) Amirali Nasir, Council Member and Vice-Chairman of Standing Committee on External Affairs (“SCEA”) Ronald Sum, Council Members and Members of ILAC Careen Wong and Tom Fu received a delegation of Qatar International Court and Dispute Resolution Centre (“QICDRC”) led by Lord Thomas of Cwmgiedd, President of Qatar International Court and Former Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, and had an insightful meeting on 17 November 2023.

Starting from the latest development of the Belt and Road Initiative and LawTech, the discussion covered an introduction to Qatar’s and Hong Kong’s legal affairs, to advanced court technology including QICDRC’s innovative electronic case management system “eCourt”; and further, potential reciprocal enforcement between international institutions. The Law Society representatives also took this prime opportunity to introduce to the QICDRC delegates the sound system of Hong Kong’s legal practice, solid foundation of the rule of law and the independent judiciary. Both sides were excited to play a bridging role with each other’s unique and valuable international experience and perspectives in cross-jurisdictional legal matters.

Since its establishment in 2009, the QICDRC has played a crucial role in the development of a fair, impartial and transparent judicial system that provides enhanced access to justice in line with the pillars of Qatar National Vision 2030. Being part of the Qatar judicial system, the judges of the Court, coming from a variety of civil and common law jurisdictions, are renowned for their expertise, independence, impartiality, integrity and propriety.

The Law Society’s representatives were honoured to receive the QICDRC delegation to exchange insights on LawTech and other related topics.
