Recognising the potential in the Central and Eastern European legal service market within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, the Law Society has been working to strengthen our network in the region. With the assistance of the European Association of Lawyers (“AEA-EAL”), we have started connecting with the lawyers’ associations in the Central and Eastern Europe since 2016. Memoranda of Understanding with the Polish National Bar of Attorneys and Gdańsk Bar Association of Attorneys-at-Law (“Gdańsk Bar”) were signed in October 2016 and June 2017 respectively.

Invited by the Gdańsk Bar and AEA-EAL, President C. M. Chan attended the second edition of the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity in Gdynia, Poland, from 16 to 17 November 2023. Themed “Business. Algorithm. Law”, the Conference discussed the legal and business implications of artificial intelligence (“AI”) and cybersecurity, alongside the challenges they pose to businesses and legal professionals in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

The President had the privilege of delivering an opening speech at the Conference to give an overview of the principle of “One Country, Two Systems”. He also highlighted the Law Society’s efforts in promoting LawTech and supporting its members in overcoming the transformative impact of AI and cybersecurity on the legal industry. On this occasion, a meeting with the AEA-EAL and Gdańsk Bar was also arranged for exchanging updates on legal developments and the work being done for respective members.
