President C. M. Chan, Council Member & Chairlady of Young Solicitors’ Group Hin Han Shum and young lawyer Jason Choi attended the IBA Annual Conference 2023 in Paris, France, from 29 October to 3 November 2023. Being an institutional member of the IBA, the President attended the IBA Council Meeting on 2 November representing the Law Society. The participating law societies and bar associations took the opportunity of the meeting to discuss issues and problems faced by respective organisations’ members.
During the Conference, Ms Shum was invited to speak at a concurrent session entitled “What does the metaverse mean for e-commerce: the use of blockchain for general contracts and dispute resolution” on 1 November. From a Hong Kong perspective, she provided insights on metaverse use cases, risks, benefits and legal issues on e-commerce cross-border matters, enforcement and the likely development of blockchain business, regulatory trends, as well as Hong Kong recovery methods for cross-border cybercrime cases. On 2 November, Ms Shum also moderated another concurrent session where she exchanged views with panellists on the issues which young lawyers and law firm management face when considering the global and industry related changes and how they impact retention. Some attendees commended Hong Kong’s mandatory practice management courses for incoming partners as a great way to add perspective to and enable better communication amongst the parties.
Taking this opportunity, the delegation paid a courtesy visit to the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in France and shared the latest developments in the Hong Kong legal industry with a particular focus on the international arena. At the side meetings with Milan Bar Association and French National Bar Council, which signed Memoranda of Understanding with the Law Society in October 2014 and October 2017 respectively, potential cooperation such as hosting joint webinars and reciprocal visits was discussed.

On this occasion, the Law Society delegation met with a number of legal organisations and lawyers’ associations from various jurisdictions to exchange updates on the legal developments and explore possible future collaborations.
