Entitled “Crossing Borders: Human Rights Violations and Lawyers’ Advocacy”, the 4th LAWASIA Human Rights Conference was held in Fukuoka, Japan, from 2 to 4 September 2023. Ms Melissa Pang, Immediate Past President of the Law Society and President of LAWASIA, was invited to deliver welcome remarks at the conference opening ceremony.

Meanwhile, following the success of the joint webinar by the Law Society and Hyogo Bar Association (“HBA”) on procedure and enforcement of debt recovery in December 2021, the Law Society is pleased to have the opportunity to collaborate with the HBA again for a joint seminar in Kobe, Japan, in a hybrid format on 5 September 2023.

President C. M. Chan and Immediate Past President Melissa Pang, along with the HBA representatives, provided an overview and the latest developments on inheritance-related matters in Hong Kong and Japan, such as the latest legislative amendments of inheritance law in Japan; and the intestate-related legislation, enduring power of attorney and the promotion of family offices in Hong Kong. The seminar was attended by around 90 members from the two places.

Immediate Past President Melissa Pang (also in her capacity as the President of LAWASIA) welcomed the participants at the 4th LAWASIA Human Rights Conference.

President C. M. Chan and Immediate Past President Melissa Pang spoke at the Seminar jointly organised by the Law Society of Hong Kong and Hyogo Bar Association.

On the occasion, meetings with the Japan Federation of Bar Associations, Tokyo Bar Association, Fukuoka Bar Association, Osaka Bar Association and HBA were held to explore the possibility of future collaboration.
