To enhance the general public's understanding of law and encourage solicitors to contribute to the community by serving the general public, the Law Society has launched the "Free Legal Helpline" 8200 8002 (the “Helpline”) since 20 May 2013. The Helpline offers legal advice to the public on five areas of law, namely:

  1. Personal Injuries
  2. Matrimonial Law
  3. Criminal Law
  4. Employment Law
  5. Wills & Probate

Members of the public can also make enquiries about mediation through the Helpline.

 

Conditions of use of the Free Legal Helpline

Personal Injuries Helpline
The panel of solicitors will provide up to 45 minutes of free consultation to victims of an incident who want to seek legal advice in their claims for compensation. The victims or their relatives (who must be aged 18 or above) on behalf of the victims can make enquiries by calling 8200 8002 and providing the following information to the operator: 
  • You are making enquiries on “personal injuries” 
  • Full name of the victim and the caller 
  • The alphabet(s) and first four digits of the Hong Kong Identity Card number of the victim 
  • Telephone number of the victim or caller 
  • Date of incident
  • Full name of the potential defendant / defendant (if known) 
A potential defendant / defendant is not eligible under this scheme.
Matrimonial Law Helpline
The panel of solicitors will provide up to 45 minutes of free consultation on legal issues relating to matrimonial matters. Members of the public can make enquiries by calling 8200 8002 and providing the following information to the operator: 
  • You are making enquiries on “matrimonial law” 
  • Full name of the caller 
  • Full name of the caller's spouse 
  • The alphabet(s) and first four digits of the Hong Kong Identity Card number of the caller 
  • Telephone number of the caller
Criminal Law Helpline
The panel of solicitors will provide up to 45 minutes of free consultation on legal issues relating to criminal matters. Members of the public can make enquiries by calling 8200 8002 and providing the following information to the operator: 
  • You are making enquiries on “criminal law” 
  • Full name of the caller
  • The alphabet(s) and first four digits of the Hong Kong Identification Card number of the caller 
  • Telephone number of the caller
Employment Law Helpline
The panel of solicitors will provide up to 45 minutes of free consultation on legal issues relating to employment matters. Members of the public can make enquiries by calling 8200 8002 and providing the following information to the operator:
  • You are making enquiries on “employment law”
  • Full name of the caller
  • Full name of the employee and employer
  • The alphabet(s) and first four digits of the Hong Kong Identification Card number of the caller
  • Telephone number of the caller
Wills & Probate Helpline
The panel of solicitors will provide up to 45 minutes of free consultation on legal issues relating to wills and probate matters. The Helpline will only handle enquiries concerning an estate that is valued at HK$10 million or less for each individual case. Members of the public can make enquiries by calling 8200 8002 and providing the following information to the operator:
  • You are making enquiries on “wills and probate”
  • Full name of the caller
  • The alphabet(s) and first four digits of the Hong Kong Identity Card number of the caller 
  • Telephone number of the caller
  • Value and nature of the estate (including where the estate is situated)
  • Presence of a will
  • Date of death and domicile of the deceased (for callers who make enquiries on inheriting an estate)

Under normal circumstances, a panel solicitor will contact you within three (3) working days of your call to the Helpline and will provide up to 45 minutes of free advice in relation to your legal issue.

The provision of legal advice through the Free Legal Helpline (the "Service") is by individual panel solicitors on a pro-bono basis. The Law Society does not accept any responsibilities and shall not be held liable in contract, tort (including negligence), or otherwise for any loss or damage whatsoever arising from and/or suffered in connection with the Service and/or any legal advice provided by panel solicitors.

All calls will be processed and panel solicitors will be invited to contact the callers within three (3) working days of the call to the Helpline. While we strive to provide the best possible assistance through the Helpline, there may be circumstances where a call may not be handled by a panel solicitor. The Law Society does not accept liability should the limitation period expire when the call is being processed or a panel solicitor could not be arranged to handle the call.

 

Mediation Helpline
Mediation is a voluntary dispute resolution process in which a neutral person, the mediator, helps the parties to reach their negotiated settlement. To continue with our efforts to serve the needs of the society, the Law Society's pilot scheme on mediation has been extended. Up to 45 minutes of free telephone session on mediation will be provided. Members of the public can make enquiries by calling 8200 8002 and providing the following information to the operator:
  • You are requesting information on “mediation” 
  • Full name of the caller
  • The alphabet(s) and first four digits of the Hong Kong Identification Card number of the caller
  • Nature of the dispute 
  • Full name of the potential opposing party (if known) 

Under normal circumstances, our Dispute Resolution Coordinator or a panel Solicitor-Mediator will contact you within three (3) working days of your call to the Helpline and will provide up to 45 minutes of free telephone session.

 

Remarks:

1. Personal data, including but not limited to the full names, HKID card numbers and telephone numbers of the caller and/or the victim (the “data subject”), is collected for the purposes of administering the Helpline and assignment of cases only. The data subject consents to the Law Society for using his or her personal data for the said purposes. All personal data will be deleted within six (6) months from the date of the call.
2. Members of the public who have already obtained legal aid or engaged a lawyer for the matter are not eligible to use the Helpline. This condition does not apply to callers of the Mediation Helpline.
3. The Helpline is available from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from Monday to Friday, except public holidays.
