The launch of Law Week 2008 by the Law Society of Hong Kong

Law Week 2008 will run from 6-12 December 2008. The Law Week is an annual event organized for 18 consecutive years by the Law Society of Hong Kong. This year, a series of community law courses will be offered by the Law Society with the sponsorship of the Legal Aid Department. Experienced solicitors together with guest speakers from 15 supporting organizations will introduce at the law courses various aspects of the law, ranging from the unrepresented litigants at Court to the cross-boundary employments. These courses will provide to members of public the opportunities for a better understanding of their legal rights and obligations.

The supporting organizations of Law Week 2008 are China Legal Service (HK) Ltd., Association of China-Appointed Attesting Officers Ltd., Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre Hong Kong Mediation Council, Hong Kong Mediation Centre, Hong Kong Society of Notaries, Hong Kong Federation of Woman, Hong Kong Federation of Women Lawyers, Consumer Council, Hong Kong Council of Social Service, Fu Hong Society, the Boys’ and Girls’ Club Association of Hong Kong, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals CROSS Centre, Evangelical Lutheran Church Social Service – Hong Kong Tin Shui Wai YOT, Cheer Lutheran Centre, and Caritas Lok Heep Club.

The opening ceremony will take place at 2:00pm, 6 December 2008 (Saturday), at Chiang Chen Studio Theatre at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The Hon Mr. Andrew Li, GBM, Chief Justice of the Court of Final Appeal, the Hon Mr. Wong Yan Lung, SC, JP Secretary for Justice, the Hon Ms. Margaret Ng, Member of the Legislative Council, the Hon Mr. Paul Chan, MH, JP, Chairman of the Legal Aid Services Council, Mr. Benjamin Cheung, JP, Director of Legal Aid Department, Mr. Paul Shieh, SC, Vice-Chairman of Hong Kong Bar Association will be the officiating guests.

Mr. Junius K.Y. Ho, Vice-President of the Law Society, and Ms. Melissa Pang, Chairperson of the Law Week 2008 Organizing Committee will join the officiating guests at the ceremony.
