The Law Society of Hong Kong is a professional association for solicitors in Hong Kong vested with statutory powers to regulate the professional conduct of solicitors, trainee solicitors and foreign lawyers. It was incorporated in 1907 as a company limited by guarantee.

Upon the invitation of the National Young Lawyers and Pupils Committee of the Malaysian Bar, Mr Tony Lau, the Law Society’s representative on the Young Commonwealth Lawyers Association (“YCLA”) Committee, Co-Chair of YCLA and Member of Young Solicitors’ Group; and young member Vanessa Cheng, represented the Law Society at the Soirée 2026 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 22 January.
The evening featured an inspiring lecture titled “Judicial Activism or Judicial Duty? Defending the Rule of Law Against Executive Hubris” by The Right Honourable Datuk Seri Utama Wan Ahmad Farid bin Wan Salleh, Chief Justice of Malaysia. The discussion highlighted the vital role of the judiciary in balancing its responsibilities in upholding the rule of law that ended with heartfelt remarks for the young lawyers, offering guidance for their professional journeys.
The Soireé provided a valuable platform to young legal talents for professional development, knowledge sharing and networking with judges and legal practitioners from around the world.
