The Ceremonial Opening of the Legal Year in Hong Kong 2026 (“OLY”) was held on 19 January 2026, gathering over 100 Presidents, Chairmen, and head delegates from 54 lawyers’ associations and legal organisations across 24 jurisdictions. His Excellency Judge Khalid bin Ali Al-Obaidli, President of the Investment and Trade Court of the State of Qatar, and The Right Honourable Tun Tengku Maimun binti Tuan Mat, former Chief Justice of Malaysia, also graced us with their presence. Representing the Law Society, President Roden Tong delivered an address at the Ceremony at the Hong Kong City Hall.

On the occasion, the Law Society and the Hong Kong Bar Association co-organised a series of side programmes from 18 to 19 January. The Presidents’ Roundtable on 19 January was a key highlight of the OLY programme. Themed “Ethics and Technology: Professionalism in the Digital Era”, delegates exchanged views on how the legal profession can adapt to technological developments while upholding the core values of independence, integrity, competence, and the duty owed to clients and the administration of justice.

The side programmes provided a rich blend of professional exchange and cultural exploration. Delegates enjoyed a tram tour, visited the Hong Kong Palace Museum and the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal, and participated in an exchange session at the Legislative Council with its Members The Honourable Nick Chan, BBS, MH, JP, former Council Member of the Law Society, and Dr The Honourable Thomas So, JP, our Past President. A Welcome Cocktail Reception at the historic Former French Mission Building, formerly home to the Court of Final Appeal, provided a unique cultural experience for our guests.

To conclude the day, a Formal Dinner was held at The Hong Kong Club in honour of guests from around the world. We were privileged to be joined by The Honourable Paul Lam, GBM, SC, JP, Secretary for Justice of the Hong Kong SAR Government, along with numerous distinguished leaders from the local legal sector. Throughout the evening, legal professionals from different jurisdictions engaged in meaningful exchanges in a warm and collegial atmosphere, bringing the OLY 2026 to a successful and memorable close.

The OLY 2026 was successfully held with a series of memorable events and side programmes that showcased Hong Kong’s vibrant legal traditions, cultural heritage, and commitment to professionalism in the digital era.
