At the invitation of the Law Society of Singapore (“LSS”), President Roden Tong, alongside Vice President Careen Wong, attended the Opening of the Legal Year 2026 in Singapore from 11 to 12 January.
The Ceremony, held on 12 January at the Supreme Court of Singapore, marked the formal commencement of Singapore’s new legal year. This year’s Ceremony carried particular historical significance as it coincided with the 200th anniversary of the Second Charter of Justice, which established a unified legal system for Singapore in 1826. The Honourable Sundaresh Menon, Chief Justice of Singapore, delivered a thought provoking and forward-looking address highlighting the essential role of a strong and trusted legal system in shaping the region’s commercial and economic success. The Attorney-General of Singapore and the President of LSS also provided insightful reflections on Singapore’s recent developments in legal policy, regulatory reform and the progress of the profession.
President Tong was also invited to speak at the Presidents’ Roundtable on “Are there challenges with talent retention and skills gaps and if so, what can be done?”, hosted by the LSS. He shared Hong Kong’s experience in nurturing future legal talent and attracting international legal professionals, and addressing talent retention issues relating to in-house lawyers.

The Law Society continues to engage in international exchanges to further strengthen ties with bar leaders worldwide.
