At the invitation of the Malaysian Bar, Vice-President Amirali Nasir attended the Opening of the Legal Year (“OLY”) 2026 in Malaysia and its side events from 11 to 12 January in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Ceremony on 12 January featured addresses by the Chief Justice of Malaysia, the Attorney General of Malaysia and President of the Malaysian Bar. Their speeches underscored the enduring importance of judicial independence as the foundation of the rule of law, a theme deeply resonant across jurisdictions.
Mr Nasir also participated in the Bar Leaders’ Roundtable Discussion entitled “Reimagining Legal Education, Training and Pupillage”, organised by the Malaysian Bar. Bar leaders from various jurisdictions exchanged views on the future of legal education, the cultivation of professional competence and the skills required to prepare the next generation of lawyers for an increasingly complex and technologically driven legal environment.
Subsequently, at the invitation of the Sabah Law Society, Mr Nasir attended the OLY 2026 in Sabah and Sarawak, along with its side events, held from 15 to 17 January in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. A series of events were arranged to mark the opening of the legal year, including the Ceremonial Procession in the early morning which played an important part in commemorating the occasion.

Mr Nasir strengthened the Law Society’s international presence by fostering cross jurisdictional dialogue on legal education, judicial independence, and the evolving needs of the global legal profession.
