At the invitation of the German Federal Bar (“BRAK”), President Roden Tong attended the biennial 6th International Lawyers’ Forum from 23 to 25 April in Berlin, Germany. Themed “Resilience and Change in the Legal Profession”, the Forum provided an international discussion platform on the current trends and developments in the rule of law and professional legal practice in various jurisdictions, in particular, as to how legal practitioners and legal organisations can build on their strengths and turn the challenges into blessings for change and growth.
On 25 April, Mr Tong shared at a panel discussion entitled “Future – Opportunities in AI”. He discussed how the Law Society assists the profession in ensuring that AI technologies align with professional standards and ethical considerations by citing our “Hong Kong Solicitors’ Guide to Professional Conduct” to regulate the conduct of solicitors in the use of technology to ensure the compliance with legal and ethical requirements. He also took the opportunity to highlight the Law Society’s Position Paper on “The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on the Legal Profession”, which aimed to impress upon our profession and other stakeholders the urgent need of timely and proactive actions and reforms, for the benefit of the legal profession as a whole.

The event attracted around 130 legal practitioners and representatives of lawyers’ associations, legal organisations and judicial administration, coming from 37 jurisdictions around the globe.
Leveraging the opportunity in Berlin, Mr Tong had a courtesy meeting with the BRAK to renew friendships and discuss possible future collaboration between our two professional associations.
