On 28 March, Vice-President & Chair of the Standing Committee on External Affairs (“SCEA”) Careen Wong, Council Member and International Legal Affairs Committee Vice-Chair Hin Han Shum, SCEA member Karen Wong, along with Chair Walter Lee, Vice-Chair Fiona Chow, and other members of the Employment Law Committee, received a 20-person delegation from the Labour Issue Committee of the DTBA during their visit to Hong Kong.

During the meeting, the Law Society representatives provided an overview of the legal system in Hong Kong, highlighting the split legal profession, solicitors’ rights of audience, and the roles and functions of the Law Society. Following this, our presentation on the regulation and protection of independent contractors and freelancers in Hong Kong sparked great interest among the DTBA delegates. 

The DTBA delegates shared updates on Japan’s legislative framework aimed at protecting freelancers. They also raised interactive discussions about the gender ratio within the Hong Kong legal profession and the employment status and nature of legal practice in Hong Kong.

The meeting was a very successful professional exchanges with the international counterpart through our global network.
