On 19 February, the Law Society’s representatives, including President Roden Tong, Vice-President Amirali Nasir, Vice-President & Chair of Standing Committee on External Affairs Careen Wong, Council Member and Chair of International Legal Affairs Committee Simon McConnell, Council Member and Chair of Young Solicitors’ Group Hin Han Shum, and then-Secretary General Heidi Chu, hosted the International Bar Association (“IBA”) delegation headed by its Vice-President Prof Dr Jörg Menzer.
During the meeting, our representatives introduced to the IBA delegation Hong Kong’s robust legal system and diverse legal services, as well as the roles and functions of the Law Society, including our work in various areas related to the Belt and Road Initiative and rule of law education.
The Law Society was a supporting organisation of the 8th IBA Asia Pacific Regional Forum Biennial Conference entitled “Vibrant Asia – Land of opportunity and promise” held on 20 February in Hong Kong. Mr Tong and Ms Wong were invited to attend the Opening Ceremony of the Conference. Gathering over 360 legal professionals from 36 jurisdictions, the Conference provided an excellent platform for overseas delegates to understand Hong Kong’s common law system under the principle of “One Country, Two Systems”.
On this occasion, Ms Shum, in the capacity as National Representatives Officer of the IBA Young Lawyers’ Committee representing the Law Society, spoke at the IBA Young Lawyers’ Committee and Asia Pacific Regional Forum Training Event titled “The Fundamentals of International Legal Business Practice” in Hong Kong on 19 February.
