Themed “Human Rights Resilience: Navigating Technological, Environmental, and Social Challenges”, the 5th LAWASIA International Human Rights Conference was held in Kathmandu, Nepal, from 15 to 17 February, attracting over 300 registrations from across the world. At the invitation of the co-organisers, LAWASIA and Nepal Bar Association, Immediate Past President Mr C. M. Chan and Past President Ms Melissa Pang represented the Law Society at the Conference as speakers.

As moderator of a session titled “Business and Human Rights: A Responsible Business for Human Rights”, Mr Chan touched upon the requirement under Listing Rules for all listed companies on The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong to produce an Environmental, Social, and Governance report annually. He also highlighted the principle of “One Country, Two Systems” and Hong Kong’s robust independent judiciary to the international community. Meanwhile, in Ms Pang’s closing remarks at the Closing Ceremony, she reiterated that, as members of the global legal fraternity, legal practitioners should leverage their expertise to advocate for justice and equality.

As an Executive Committee (“ExCo”) Member and Immediate Past President respectively representing the Law Society, Mr Chan and Ms Pang also attended the LAWASIA ExCo Meeting held on 15 February in a hybrid format.

The insightful discussions provided valuable perspectives and strategies for promoting human rights and legal cooperation across the globe.
