From 24 to 25 January, President Roden Tong was invited the Milan Bar Association (“MBA”) to attend its Opening of the Legal Year (“OLY”) in Milan, Italy.

On 24 January, the day before the OLY in Milan, Mr Tong attended a Conference titled “The New Tools for Managing Legal Costs: Litigation Funding and Legal Insurance”. Bringing together bar leaders and legal professionals from various jurisdictions, the Conference explored the origin and functioning of litigation funding, the sale and purchase of litigious credits as funding instrument and the barriers to the spread of litigation funding in Italy. Alongside bar leaders from Mexico, Spain, England, Luxembourg, and Germany, Mr Tong shared insights on the situation in Hong Kong regarding legal contracts for lawyers’ clients, as well as litigation funding. At the sidelines of the Conference, Mr Tong was interviewed by a media agency on collaborative opportunities between the Law Society and the MBA.

On 25 January, the OLY Ceremony marked the start of the legal year with President of the Court of Appeal and President of the MBA’s addresses on legal issues and reflections on the state of the judiciary.

Mr Tong’s attendance in the OLY 2025 in Milan was the first face-to-face rekindling of professional connection with our legal counterparts in Milan physically since the resumption of normalcy after the pandemic.
