From 12 to 13 January, President Roden Tong was invited by the Law Society of Singapore to attend the Opening of the Legal Year (“OLY”) in Singapore and its side event. 

The Ceremony to mark the opening of the legal year was held at the Supreme Court of Singapore where the Chief Justice of Singapore, Attorney General of Singapore and President of the Law Society of Singapore delivered important speeches to reflect on developments, policies and milestones in the legal arena.

At the OLY Ceremony Lunch reception that brought together Judiciary, bar leaders and head delegates from various jurisdictions, Mr Tong exchanged updates on recent developments in respective jurisdictions, and took the opportunity to highlight Hong Kong’s robust legal system and diverse legal services. 

At the Bar Leaders’ Roundtable Discussion themed “AML: Harmonising practice? Or is this too high an order?”, which gathered over 40 bar leaders and delegates from Singapore, Brunei, China, Japan, Malaysia, India, and the United Kingdom, Mr Tong talked about global AML compliance challenges, the robustness of Hong Kong’s legal framework, and the proactive measures implemented by the Law Society. 

Mr Tong shared with the overseas counterparts the Law Society’s work in the international legal arena to hope for expansion of future collaborations.
