At the invitation of the Malaysian Bar, President Roden Tong attended the Opening of the Legal Year (“OLY”) 2025 in Malaysia and its side events from 7 to 8 January in Putrajaya, Malaysia.
The Malaysia OLY 2025 programme commenced on 7 January, with a Bar Leaders’ Lunch where presidents and head delegates from international legal organisations and lawyers’ associations from various jurisdictions exchanged updates on recent developments in respective jurisdictions.
At the subsequent Bar Leaders’ Roundtable Discussion themed “Building a Just Economy: Harmonizing Legal Expertise, Human Rights, and Rule of Law for Global Prosperity”, Mr Tong shared his valuable insights on the role of legal frameworks in advancing inclusive economic growth by highlighting Hong Kong’s business-friendly legal frameworks; Hong Kong as a super-connector under the Belt and Road Initiative; and the roles of Hong Kong solicitors and the Law Society in advocating for fair business practices and corporate responsibility.
The OLY Ceremony on 8 January started with a formal procession by key members of the legal fraternity, followed by important speeches of reflection and visions by the Chief Justice of Malaysia, Attorney General of Malaysia and President of the Malaysian Bar, stressing the importance of judicial independence to safeguard the rule of law.
Mr Tong took the opportunity to highlight Hong Kong’s robust legal system, diverse legal services, and the Law Society’s work in the international legal arena to the counterparts.
