The Law Society of Hong Kong is a professional association for solicitors in Hong Kong vested with statutory powers to regulate the professional conduct of solicitors, trainee solicitors and foreign lawyers. It was incorporated in 1907 as a company limited by guarantee.

Vice-President Amirali Nasir attended the International Association of Lawyers (“UIA”) Governing Board Meeting and the 66th UIA Congress in Dakar, Senegal from 25 to 30 October. Mr Nasir is the UIA Regional Secretary representing the Law Society. He discussed with the UIA in some details our plan to strengthen working relationship, which includes the signing of a memorandum of understanding. Many participants of the event indicated interest in various topics relating to the Hong Kong’s legal landscape such as the system for overseas judges, judicial independence, whether a lawyer from the Mainland or a civil law jurisdiction can practise in Hong Kong, etc.
Mr Nasir also took the opportunity to update the participants from around the world on Hong Kong’s legal initiatives, such as the establishment of the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization (“AALCO”) Hong Kong Regional Arbitration Centre and eBRAM.
