The Law Society remains abreast of major developments across different legal markets by sending representatives and young lawyers to attend selected international events regularly. Because of the pandemic, it is sad to know that almost all the physical annual conferences globally have been cancelled. While the valuable face-to-face meetings and conferences are unfortunately not an option in 2020 due to the pandemic, with the help of technology, the Law Society is able to continue the collaboration and exchange with lawyers associations and legal practitioners around the world virtually.

The LAWASIA 2020 Conference Online opened on 10 September 2020 with its first session on “Bar Issues during the Pandemic in each Jurisdiction”. 18 bar leaders from 11 jurisdictions formed a panel and exchanged information on the recent developments in their respective jurisdictions. As the moderator, President Melissa Pang took the opportunity to interact with other Bar Leaders from around the globe. Vice-President C.M. Chan also participated as a panel speaker to share an update on the Hong Kong situation and the work the Law Society had done for our members during the pandemic. The event was well-attended by over 300 registrants from 45 jurisdictions.

Various bar leaders shared the situation of their jurisdictions amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

Representing the Law Society, President and Vice-President C.M. Chan participated in the Bar Leaders’ LAWASIA Roundtable.
