At its meeting on 19 August 2014, the Council of the Law Society of Hong Kong considered the results of the Extraordinary General Meeting held on 14 August 2014 (“EGM”) and resolved as follows:

  1. Pursuant to Resolution 1 adopted by its members at the EGM, the Law Society states that the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary are the core values of Hong Kong and nothing set out in the White Paper recently issued by the Information Office of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China (the “White Paper”) shall detract from or undermine such core values.

  2. Pursuant to Resolution 2 adopted by its members at the EGM, the Council has requested the former President of the Law Society to withdraw his statements on the White Paper made on 16 June 2014.


On 19 August 2014, Mr Ambrose S K Lam tendered his resignation as President of the Law Society and his resignation was accepted by the Council. Mr Stephen W S Hung has been elected as President of the Law Society with immediate effect.

The Law Society respects the views of its members and welcomes constructive dialogue and debate. It reiterates that it is apolitical and it will continue to focus on defending the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary as well as promoting the interests of its members and the profession.
