Following the success of last year's "Path Builders" Mentorship Programme for 93 students from 11 schools in the Yuen Long District, the Law Society of Hong Kong launched a new phase of the programme this year.
The launching ceremony of the 2nd Phase Mentorship Programme was held on 25 April 2010 with more than 250
participants including mentors from the Law Society of Hong Kong and other professional bodies, students and guests attended.
Officiating guests included Ms. Sally Wong, Commissioner for Narcotics; Mr. Leung Chun Ying, Chairman of
Hong Kong Coalition of Professional Services; Mr. P.Y. Tam, President of Hong Kong Institute of Planners; Mr. Tang Chun Keung, Chairman of the Headmasters’ Association of the Yuen Long District Secondary Schools; Ms. Cheng Shui Kwan, representative of the Headmasters’ Association of the North District Secondary School; Mr. Huen Wong, President of the Law Society of Hong Kong; Mr. Stephen Hung, Chairman of Standing Committee on External Affairs of the Law Society of Hong Kong; Ms. Melissa Pang, Council Member of the Law Society of Hong Kong; Mr. Philip Wong, Chairman of the Community Relations Committee of the Law Society of Hong Kong and Mr. Mak Hon Ming, Chairman of the working party of the "Path Builders" Mentorship Programme.
At the launching ceremony, the officiating guests lighted up sunflowers, which is a symbol of vitality and vigor, and blessed the mentees with hope a bright future staying away from drugs.
In addressing the audience, Mr. Huen Wong, President of the Law Society remarked: "This year, 200 students from 27 secondary schools from the Yuen Long and North districts participate in the mentorship programme and 111 voluntary mentors comprising members of the Law Society of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Bar Association, the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, the Hong Kong Institute of Planners and Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors were recruited. The number nearly doubled that of last year which proved the effectiveness of the mentorship programme."
Mr. Wong also advised the mentees that they will have better options in life if they say “No” when they are tempted to engage in some activities they should not be involved at all especially illegal activities
Under Phase 2 of the mentorship programme, mentors will take the initiative to communicate with their mentees regularly to foster mentor-mentee relationship. The Law Society will also hold activities from time to time to provide opportunities for facilitating mentor-mentee interaction.
