Mr Edmund Y S Cheung JP admitted to Roll of Honour

At the Annual General Meeting, the Law Society admitted Mr. Edmund Y. S. CHEUNG JP to its Roll of Honour. In moving the admission, former President Dr. Simon S. O. IP said, “During Mr. CHEUNG’s presidency, the Law Society organized for the first time a historic visit by solicitors to Beijing and Shanghai in 1979 when the door to the Mainland was still virtually closed and lawyers on the Mainland hardly existed. He was a pioneer of his era; China then was not the China we know today. That historic visit laid a foundation stone for Hong Kong lawyers doing business on the Mainland.” Mr. CHEUNG was admitted as a solicitor in 1957 and was President of the Law Society from 1979-81.

Free RME electives

To promote good risk management of legal practice, the Law Society launched a mandatory risk management education (“RME”) programme in 2004. All solicitors practising in Hong Kong law firms have to complete a one-off core course and then in every subsequent year, not less than 3 hours of accredited elective courses on risk management. Apart from approving elective courses organized by other providers, the Law Society also provides elective courses on various risk management topics for its members.

At the Annual General Meeting, the President announced the resolution that starting from November 2008, all RME electives to be offered by the Society will be free of charge. This will mean a saving to the Law Society members of not less than HK$2 million per year.
