The Council of the Law Society notes the result of the voting at the Extraordinary General Meeting held today. Whilst it is pleased that the attempt to unseat the President and four other Council members has been rejected by the membership it does not regard the result in any way as a victory. The holding of the EGM has caused divisiveness amongst the profession, unreasonably tarnished the reputations of five Council members and left unresolved the problem that the profession faces over the continuation of its professional indemnity insurance scheme.

Members have had their say. Now is the time to go forward with a united front to convince the Administration, the Legislature and the profession that solicitors should not remain insurers of last resort. A balance must be found between the interests of the profession and the public that does not jeopardize the future well being of either.

The Council will be working to achieve this in the months ahead. It hopes to have the support of the membership in so doing.
