The Law Society welcomes today's announcement of the acceptance by the Chief Executive of the recommendation of the Judicial Officers Recommendation Commission on the appointment of the Honourable Mr. Justice Andrew Cheung Kui-nung to succeed Chief Justice Geoffrey Ma as the new Chief Justice of the Court of Final Appeal with effect from 11 January 2021

Notwithstanding the many challenges arising from the political and social conflicts faced by the city over the years, Hong Kong continues to maintain a strong, independent and internationally respected Judiciary. The city is deeply indebted to Chief Justice Geoffrey Ma who has been ably and tirelessly leading the Judiciary since September 2010 to uphold the rule of law and independence of the Judiciary in Hong Kong. We are confident that the strong stewardship of Chief Justice Ma will continue to benefit Hong Kong for the remaining term of his tenure.

Mr. Justice Cheung has a distinguished record of judicial service on the Bench since being appointed a District Judge in 2001. He was appointed the Chief Judge of the High Court and the President of the Court of Appeal of the High Court in 2011, and a Permanent Judge of the Court of Final Appeal in 2018.

Mr Justice Cheung is widely recognized for his dedication, integrity, professionalism and leadership during his term of service as the Chief Judge of the High Court.

The Law Society is confident that Mr. Justice Cheung will continue with the good tradition of Chief Justice Geoffrey Ma to head an independent Judiciary upholding the rule of law which is of cardinal importance to Hong Kong under the principle of One Country Two Systems.
